The root chakra (or Muladhara) is the first of the seven primary chakras, located in the base of the spine in the tailbone area. This chakra is concerned with balancing the physical and spiritual life, survival and grounding. Your primal fight or flight instinct is initiated from this chakra. It is thought to be the grounding force that allows us to connect to the earth energies and empower our being.
As this chakra is the most physical of the seven, the most common way to open it is through physical activity. From sport and exercise to yoga and even housework, any activity will strengthen this chakra. Practicing yoga and meditation are extremely popular ways to open up the lower spine, where the root is located. Bridge pose is a great technique to try as it keeps your feet firmly rooted to the Earth while your spine stays engaged in the release of excess root chakra energy. When meditating, focus all your energy on the root of the spine – the best poses are those that enhance your connection to the earth, so try to keep your body as close to the ground as you can.
When the root chakra is balanced you feel centred, grounded, and stable. You may feel a strong connection to others around you, and that your life is able to work effortlessly on all levels. You have vigour and self-assurance rather than arrogance or fear, and you feel calm, composed’ and ready for what life throws at you. You are healthy and want to take care of yourself, usually manifesting as an interest in your nutritional intake and physical exercise. A balanced root chakra is crucial as it is often thought that it provides energy to the six other chakras, meaning that if it is blocked it is likely that your other chakras will be as well.
When the first chakra is blocked you may feel uncertain or scared. You become ungrounded which can make you absent minded, self-obsessed and more prone to depression or grief. You may find you start encountering problems with your finances, home life or security as your ability to connect with them becomes much more difficult. You may fear for your survival but lack the energy both physically and mentally give you the boost to do anything about it. Physical issues that stem from an unbalanced root chakra include suffering from haemorrhoids, constipation, sciatica, or prostate problems.
A large portion of our society has a blocked or unbalanced root chakra, however as with all the chakras, with the correct training, understanding and acceptance we can help strengthen our root chakra, and use it to ground us every day.
