The gentle yellow citrine is a sunny and affordable stone, whose bright energy lights up the lives of those who work with it. It has energies of good fortune and luck, thought to be the stone that will draw all the good things in life to you.
Citrine is a yellow-to-golden member of the quartz family, which is rarely found naturally. Most commercial citrines are heat treated amethyst or smoky quartzes. The majority of citrine is mined in Brazil, however natural citrine can also be found in Scotland, Russia, Uruguay and Madagascar.
Citrines name comes from the Latin word “citrina” which means “yellow”, a reference to the citrines sunny colouring. The stone has gained popularity over the last few decades, however it has been known to man for thousands of years. It wasn’t until 1556 that the term “citrine” was formally used, as up until that time, the stone had been known simply as “yellow quartz.”
Citrine has a historic reputation as the “success stone” or “merchant stone” as it is believed to attract money, and indeed, it was used to acquire wealth by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who first wore citrine as jewellery.
Ancient cultures also utilised the powers of citrine by placing the gem on the forehead of an elder, in the belief that would increase his psychic power.
So what makes the citrine so special that has made its properties revered for so long? Well the citrine radiates a joyful solar energy, which helps keep a vibrant flow of energy running through your body. As it carries the power of the sun, it is a powerful regenerator, drawing away stress and negativity and bringing in a quiet refreshing peace. It is excellent for overcoming depression, fears and phobias, breaking up these negative energies and clearing them from your aura. As it does not absorb any negative energy from its environment, it is a stone that never needs energetic clearing.
On a physical level, it is believed that citrine helps benefit the digestive system, and is specifically good for conditions of the mouth, stomach ache, nausea, IBS, appendicitis and can also help balancing your weight.
Citrine is closely associated with the solar plexus chakra, used metaphysically to increase, magnify and clarify personal power and energy. Just having these powerful gems in the room with you while you’re at work, as you relax or when you meditate are great ways to increase the flow of energy through your solar plexus chakra.

Combine this with its affordable price tag and citrine makes for a popular choice of jewellery. A long necklace with a citrine pendant will resonate strongly with your solar plexus chakra but citrine is also available set in earrings, bracelets, charms or rings. If your career revolves around any type of sales, rumour has it that placing citrine in the cash drawer will promote success and wealth in any business.
It’s unsurprising that this popular wealth stone has been spotted on hugely successful stars including Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé.
