In many places around the world, today marks the celebration of Halloween.
From trick or treating to pumpkin carving and fancy dress costumes, Halloween is observed in a surprising variety of different ways. In some countries, huge festivals take place, while in others the celebration is marked through more sedate, religious customs.
We take a look at some of the most interesting traditions worldwide.
Ireland
It is believed that Halloween originated in Ireland, out of the Gaelic festival Samhain which marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the ‘darker’ half of the year. For the Celts Samhain was a very spiritual time and they believed that on 31st October departed souls returned to their former homes and potentially malevolent spirits were released from the Otherworld, becoming visible to mankind. Traditions and superstitions created by our pagan ancestors such as pumpkin carving, ‘trick or treating’ and lighting lanterns are all still observed in Irish Halloween celebrations to this day.
Austria
Some Austrians choose to welcome dead souls back to earth on Halloween by leaving out bread, water and a lit lamp before they go to bed. The night is considered very magical in the country.
China
In China, Halloween is celebrated as “Teng Chieh,” a lantern festival that finishes the Chinese New Year celebrations. Food and water are placed in front of photographs of deceased family members, whilst lanterns shaped like dragons and swans are sent into the sky to ward off evil and light the path of departed spirits.
Mexico
In most Spanish speaking countries, Halloween is celebrated as “El Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) on November 1st and 2nd. The celebration honours the departed souls of relatives and friends who have passed away. It is believed that on Halloween the spirits return to their homes and reunite with their loved ones. Deeply rooted in religious belief, people often build alters and leave flowers, photographs, food and drink and fresh water for the departed.
Germany
In Germany, some people still practise putting away their knives on Halloween night so they are not at risk of harm from malicious spirits.
USA
The popularity of Halloween in the US increases every year and it has come to be America’s second biggest commercial holiday. Today many people celebrate the day with costumes, sweets and trick or treating without really knowing its history or traditions, causing some to argue that Halloween has lost its spiritual meaning in the country due to consumerism and the influence of the media.
Whether you choose to celebrate in a cultural, spiritual or material way this year, it’s always nice to explore the history and different traditions of Halloween.
