What happens when a person decides to let their life decisions be guided by a self-help book, and not just one book, but the principles of one self help book per month for a year? Well, that’s exactly what Marianne Power did, and she documents the moving, and oftentimes funny journey of self-discovery in her book, called Help Me!
So, what got Marianne started on this quest in the first place?
Well, she was feeling ‘stuck in a rut’; she was single, home was a rented room in London, and she was constantly broke! Then several years ago, whilst nursing quite the hangover, she had the idea to explore self-help books and then write up her experience via a blog. This was not a big leap for her as she was already a freelance journalist. The blog got under way in 2014, and it wasn’t long before its garnered interest from book publishers, but Marianne didn’t say yes at first, trusting her gut instinct that the timing was too soon – maybe the self-help was paying off! But eventually she did strike a deal, with the publishing house Picador, and it is probably no surprise that she felt so comfortable with them, as they also were responsible for turning Helen Fielding’s column for the Independent into Bridget Jones Diary. There have of course been plenty of comparisons and parallels drawn between Marianne as being the modern-day version of a Bridget Jones character. (more…)
There are certain movies that British film makers do so well, and Finding Your Feet is a fine example of a heart-warming comedy with a theme of ‘A second chance at life’.
The film stars many British heavyweights – Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley to name a few…
Staunton plays snooty Lady Sandra Abbott, but whilst celebrating her husband’s retirement and their marriage of forty years, she discovers that he has been having an affair, to add insult to injury the affair is with her best friend! (more…)

The film stars Chris Evans (our magazine cover), who is most famous for playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in The Avengers & Captain America movies, so this film is a bit of a departure for him. Mckenna Grace plays one of the main roles, and it is a lot to ask of such a young actress to be in nearly every scene, but despite her tender age she already has a lot of television and films under her belt. You may recognise Jenny Slate from popular television shows like House of Lies, Parks and Recreation and Girls to name a few. Lindsay Duncan you will know as a stage, television and film actress, you might have seen her in the film Birdman, Alice in Wonderland or the television show Dr Who and last but by no means least award winning actress Octavia Spencer, who played in films The Help and Hidden Figures. The Book of Enoch says that phoenixes are bird-like angels, in terms of rank they would sit alongside cherubim (these angels keep records of God’s work; they establish how to carry out the Divine plan) and seraphim (these angels are sometimes referred to as the ‘burning ones’, they are thought to be the closest to God, and their red colour represents their burning love for him).
The mythical Phoenix is often associated with the sun.
Around every five hundred years the phoenix will feel death upon him; he will build a funeral pyre in which to immolate himself. But shortly after he will rise from the ashes (hence the phoenix rising), fully restored!
As such the phoenix is the perfect symbol for New Year, as he represents immortality, resurrection and regeneration. But the phoenixes message should not just be of a rebirth in the hereafter, but a message of fresh starts and life beginning anew in the here and now. (more…)
If you have been following our blog, you will be aware of an upcoming series of posts based around developing your psychic abilities. To begin your journey, a useful tool for spiritual progress is to keep a diary or journal.
What is journaling?
The first point to make is that a spiritual diary is not a diary at all. Your entries should be a lot different from those of your personal diary where you might discuss events or something you did that day. For example “I went shopping today and bought a new dress” would be a classic journal entry. Think of your spiritual diary as a daily written record of personal reactions on spiritual matters. If written regularly you will make quick progress along the spiritual path. (more…)
