“Life is random, but when you finish a puzzle you know you’ve made all the right choices.”
The film PUZZLE is actually adapted from an Argentine film called ‘Rompecabezas’ the tile means puzzle in Spanish.
Agnes (played by our cover star Kelly Macdonald), has never ventured far from home or family, she was raised in a tight-nit immigrant community by her widowed father. Now in her early 40’s she finds herself somewhat adrift with a husband and children after focusing solely on their wants and needs.
As a birthday present Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle, and finds that she is very good at it, and it gives her a heady thrill that she has not experienced in a long time. This is the beginning of a quiet but dramatic transformation of her life.
Robert is a wealthy inventor, and somewhat of a recluse, and Agnes meets him as a ‘puzzle partner’, recognising her talent for puzzles, he recruits her for a world jigsaw tournament. This is something that Agnes wants to pursue, but it means stepping away from her domestic bubble to go after a new hobby. Not everyone in the family embraces the change so enthusiastically. (more…)
The Good Place is essentially a comedy about the afterlife, which sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, but it has been a surprising hit. The show is a Netflix Original, and as I write this season 1 is available in full and the second half of season two is being delivered week by week. Season 3 has already been commissioned and is likely to air in autumn this year.
In broad terms there is ‘The Good Place’, as you might conceptualise heaven and there is an opposite ‘The Bad Place’ (Hell). The series was created by Michael Schur, who you might recognise for other quirky programmes such as Parks and Recreation, The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. (more…)
There are certain movies that British film makers do so well, and Finding Your Feet is a fine example of a heart-warming comedy with a theme of ‘A second chance at life’.
The film stars many British heavyweights – Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley to name a few…
Staunton plays snooty Lady Sandra Abbott, but whilst celebrating her husband’s retirement and their marriage of forty years, she discovers that he has been having an affair, to add insult to injury the affair is with her best friend! (more…)
The film stars Chris Evans (our magazine cover), who is most famous for playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in The Avengers & Captain America movies, so this film is a bit of a departure for him. Mckenna Grace plays one of the main roles, and it is a lot to ask of such a young actress to be in nearly every scene, but despite her tender age she already has a lot of television and films under her belt. You may recognise Jenny Slate from popular television shows like House of Lies, Parks and Recreation and Girls to name a few. Lindsay Duncan you will know as a stage, television and film actress, you might have seen her in the film Birdman, Alice in Wonderland or the television show Dr Who and last but by no means least award winning actress Octavia Spencer, who played in films The Help and Hidden Figures. When I wrote this article Beyoncé had pretty much broken the internet, for what you might ask – announcing a performance at something big like the Super Bowl, dropping a new album unannounced, advising her fans of tickets going on sale for her concerts? No – in fact it’s because she is pregnant and with twins no less!
Beyoncé and Jay Z already have a daughter – Blue Ivy who is five years old, speculation was rife at the time that she did not carry the baby herself, perhaps using a surrogate. Which may in part explain why she has so publicly depicted this pregnancy with a series of nearly-nude photos. That of course has not stopped the rumour-mill going into overdrive with questions of whether she used IVF, to become pregnant, with many believing the chances are higher as she is having twins… (more…)
For centuries many have believed that the moon and the different phases it goes through has a powerful effect on our behaviour. Just like what horoscope sign you were born under can impact your personality traits, so can the moon phase that you were born under.
Understanding a bit about moon phases and the impact it can have on your life, allows you to turn the unique energies to your advantage, so you are coordinating your life with the natural rhythm of the phases to produce better outcomes.
The following celebrities were born under a New Moon:
Cindy Crawford, Kate Upton, Lana Del Ray, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Hurley, Mayim Bialik and Prince William to name a few. They share in common a spontaneous quality. They are not ones for planning ahead, and when they do things will often not be successful. (more…)
Is it possible that something as simple as tidying can transform the space you live in, how you think, how you feel and spark enthusiasm and inspiration where once there was only clutter? Marie Kondo thinks so…
The name Marie Kondo, may not immediately resonate with you, but the chances are you have read something about her or someone has told you about her techniques (KonMari Tidying) or her books.
Marie runs a business in Tokyo helping clients to declutter and tidy their homes, to make the spaces more inspiring and serene. With a three month waiting list, she wrote a book that would allow the masses to use her techniques, which she coined ‘KonMari’.
Her first book was called ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A simple, effective way to banish clutter forever’, which has sold more than two million copies worldwide. In January 2016 her latest book was released in the UK – ‘Spark Joy: An Illustrated Guide to the Japanese Art of Tidying’. (more…)
Blake Lively is a typical earth sign; she is sensitive – but not too emotional. She has strong family values, she is efficient and a firm believer in actions and consequences.
She is one of five children, and no doubt that has added to her ability to be flexible and adaptable, skills that also lend themselves well to being an actress. Whilst she is sensitive, she is not afraid to be vulnerable, which again serves her well in her acting career where she has to put herself in the shoes of the character she is playing.
Virgos need to socialise, it helps them appreciate and understand others better, Blake would be the first to say that she is very happy being a home body and feels most at home in her kitchen pottering and baking. Probably even more so now that she has had a child. She married Ryan Reynolds (a fellow actor) in 2012 and they welcomed a baby girl named James in December 2014. (more…)
Many celebrities are a Leo star sign and it is no surprise as they are naturally confident, powerful, a little bit vain and are born performers – they want to dazzle and put on a show! Jennifer Lopez is no different in this regard, she learnt from a young age the importance of presentation; she can be dramatic and imaginative, but underneath it all she is disciplined, serious and always in-control.
Jennifer plays to the norms in terms of Leo’s appearance – she is shapely, with bold eyes and often with dramatic hair. Whilst she can act kittenish, she is really quite commanding and authoritative. Her clothes are worn to make an impact and leave a lasting impression.
Generally speaking Leo’s are charming, and whilst Jennifer is happy to take centre stage for work purposes, she has learnt to guard against intrusion in to her personal life. Leo’s in general are trusting people, they assume that they will get the same level of loyalty and integrity back that they give out, but that is not always so. They will always put a strong face on things, even when internally they are in turmoil, they can take a long time to recover from disloyalty or a broken heart on the inside. Even so, they remain fully committed to the concept of love. Jennifer once told Vanity Fair “I remain an eternal optimist about love. I believe in love…it’s still my biggest dream.” (more…)
Christina Rene Hendricks was born on the 3rd of May 1975 making her a Taurus sign, as an American actress her most notable role to date is playing character Joan Harris in AMC series Mad Men; she has been nominated for an Emmy Award five times for the role. The show is coming to end after seven seasons, with the final episodes airing around the world now. So, just what Taurean traits got her this on-screen success?
As a Taurean she is serious about the projects she embarks on, setting herself hard goals to achieve, and moving through them one by one. She is not afraid to stand her ground and share her views. As well as being creative she is organised, and she trusts her intuition – if something doesn’t feel right, she will move in a different direction.
As a youngster she was not particularly enthused with her appearance, and she began colouring her hair red at the tender age of ten, after being inspired by the book ‘Anne of Green Gables’. (more…)
