The Power of the Elements Introduction

We are all familiar with the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water, they have all been studied for centuries, but are you aware of their incredible healing and nurturing powers? Over the coming months we are going to be exploring each element in detail, looking at what each element means and how you can harness its power in your daily life.

For now, we bring you a brief guide to the history or the elements, and a short introduction to each one.

History

The four elements, which are sometimes referred to as the ‘classical elements’ are believed to be the simplest essential parts needed to sustain life.
The ancient Greeks first suggested that these basic materials made up all earthly matter and that every visible thing was made up of a combination of the four elements.

The four elements have not only been used in scientific explanations but are regularly referred to in alchemy, medicine, religion and astrology.

The elements are utilised in all our lives, and can relate to every part of our psyche. By connecting to the elements around us we can live life to the fullest, in harmony with the natural world. When used consciously, the elements will serve us as a spiritual compass, pointing us in the right direction. You can use them to find exactly where you need healing or reflection, and to lead you safely back to your centre.

Air

Under the air element are the zodiac signs:

• Libra
• Gemini
• Aquarius

• Associated with the heart chakra
• Masculine energy
• Represents the mind, knowledge, travel, freedom, and the ability to reason.

Earth

Under the earth element are the zodiac signs:

• Taurus
• Virgo
• Capricorn

• Associated with the root chakra
• Feminine energy
• Represents birth, death, career, fertility and stability.

Fire

Under the fire element are the zodiac signs:

• Aries
• Leo
• Sagittarius

• Associated with the naval chakra
• Masculine energy
• Represents passion, energy, strength, and the powers of change.

Water

Under the water element are the zodiac signs:

• Cancer
• Scorpio
• Pisces

• Associated with the sacrum chakra
• Feminine energy
• Represents emotions, intuition, psychic growth and the deep self.

The elements hold great power, which can be accessed and utilised by anyone. To communicate with the elements we need to honour and respect each one in order to draw their qualities into our life.

By connecting with the elements, we can become more in tune with nature, and therefore more aware of our personal nature. We can become grounded by channelling the elements, and integrating with the physical and spiritual world that surrounds us.

The different traits of each element can be used to help us through troubles in our lives and can be used in self-healing. Water hydrates us, washes us and reminds us that obstacles don’t have to stop our progress. Earth is the ground we walk on, helping us stay rooted and strong. Fire keeps us warm and provides us with the vitality of life force. Air is the invisible force that helps us breathe and gives us life.
